At What Age Should a Kid Go to the Dentist?

Child with Tooth Brush

At What Age Should a Kid Go to the Dentist?

Most dentists, including your children’s dentist in Pikesville, MD, recommend bringing your child in when you notice the first tooth erupting or by age one at the latest.

These early appointments are crucial to your child’s oral development, allowing the dentist to monitor how their teeth are erupting as well as jaw growth and oral development.

Additionally, early dental visits help acclimate children to the dentist and team. They become familiar with the atmosphere of the dental setting and develop trust in visiting our practice.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

We make the first visit fun, allowing your child a ride in the dental chair. We also make a game of counting their teeth (or tooth!) while examining the oral structure.

Following these early exams, your dentist will talk to you about any areas of concern, answer your questions, and provide tips for optimal at-home oral care.

As Your Child Grows

We always introduce age-appropriate treatments as needed, including orthodontic evaluations, dental fillings, emergency dental treatment, and more.

Typically, we see children every six months for preventive care, which includes:

  • A comprehensive dental checkup
  • Teeth cleaning after a certain age

We also provide fluoride treatments and dental sealants to prevent tooth decay and strengthen tooth enamel.

At home, your child should brush twice daily or following every meal. Your dentist will talk to you about how to best brush your child’s teeth. When age-appropriate, we will also show your child how to brush and floss independently to reduce cavities and other oral health complications.
