What Are Veneers?
Made of durable and beautiful high-quality porcelain, porcelain veneers are small shells that fit right over the tops of your teeth to conceal imperfections while also enhancing your smile’s beauty. Veneers porcelain looks incredibly lifelike, and most people can't tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth.
Veneers can address a range of cosmetic issues in otherwise healthy teeth. Some of the most common reasons people ask about veneers include:
- Adjusting the size or shape of teeth for a more uniform appearance
- Correcting discolorations caused by staining foods, certain medications, or damage to the enamel
- Improving the appearance of gaps and minor spacing issues
- Concealing minor damage that doesn’t extend into the structure of the tooth
Are veneers right for you? The best way to find out is by scheduling a consultation with one of our talented and experienced dentists.
What Is the Process for Placing Veneers?
The porcelain veneers procedure takes place over two appointments. During the first appointment, we’ll prepare your teeth and take impressions to ensure that your veneers fit perfectly.
Prepping your teeth for veneers typically involves the removal of a small amount of enamel. This is a painless procedure, and we only remove a very thin layer, usually less than 1 millimeter. Enamel removal helps the veneers fit better among your other teeth for a more natural appearance.
Do I Need a Veneer or a Crown?
While these porcelain teeth restorations do have some similarities, they are far more different than they are alike.
Both are made of porcelain, and both improve the appearance of teeth that don’t look their best. However, veneers and crowns are used in very different ways. Veneers are primarily a cosmetic treatment, used to improve the aesthetics of otherwise-healthy teeth. Porcelain crowns are primarily a restorative treatment, used to protect and repair a damaged tooth that might otherwise be lost.
Veneers are thin shells that fit over the front surface of a tooth. Crowns are much more substantial, encasing the tooth completely. While porcelain is a popular material for crowns, they are often made of other, even more durable materials, such as gold, especially on teeth that do the hard work of chewing.
While porcelain veneers cost less than crowns, crowns are usually at least partly covered by dental insurance. Contact your insurance to find out if your plan offers any discounts on cosmetic dentistry procedures or if the porcelain veneers cost may be partially covered.
How Long Will My Veneers Last?
Veneers can last a long time—over 15 years—provided you take good care of them. For the most part, veneers can be cared for just like you would your own teeth. Brush and floss as recommended by your dentist and continue to visit our office twice a year for examinations and cleanings. Use caution when eating sticky, crunchy, or chewy foods, and avoid biting down on anything that isn’t food. For our patients who grind or clench their teeth, we recommend a nightguard to protect your teeth and prevent damage to your veneers.
If a veneer does happen to come loose, call our office immediately. We may be able to bond it back in place provided that there is no damage to the veneer.
