How To Prepare Your Child For The Dentist

Taking your child to visit the dentist regularly is vital towards their overall health. Tooth decay in children is extremely common, and if your child does develop this issue, it's more likely that they will have tooth decay when their permanent teeth grow in as well. Keeping up with those dental appointments is the only way to fully prevent the condition. Even though visiting the dentist can be scary for children, if you prepare, you'll be able to help them overcome any dental fears.

Most dentists recommend that your child starts seeing a dentist at around 1 year old, which helps to prevent any complications early on, and helps to care for those first little teeth popping up.

Preparing for the Dentist

Here's some great ways to prepare for your child's dental visits that can make the process easier:

  • Find a family dentist: Taking your child to a family dentist or pediatric dentist is very important. If you have a dentist that you love, it may be your first thought to take your child there. However, working with a team that has experience with children's dentistry is vital towards getting the best care and the best experience for your child. Take some time to research dental offices in your area that provide care for young children, and consider even visiting a couple of offices to make a more informed choice.
  • Keep the dentist informed: Make sure that the dentist you choose knows everything about your child's health that may be relevant. Any conditions or allergies, and any medications that your child is taking will be important for the dentist to know. Thumb sucking habits can also affect the teeth and jaw, so be sure to tell your dentist about this as well.
  • Keep your child informed: If you are taking an older child to a new dentist, make sure to talk to them about what they can expect during the appointment. This will help your child to understand the process, and it can help to avoid any stress from being surprised during the appointment. For children of all ages, be sure to practice brushing before the appointment. This helps kids get more familiar with having tools inside their mouths, and can make the dental visit a bit less scary.
  • Know what to expect: If this is your first child, you may not know what to expect. Working with an experienced family dentist means that you'll be working with a team who knows all about the difficulties that children go through during dental appointments. They will work hard to explain everything that is happening, and to help your child feel comfortable.
