The Dental Implant Process

Tooth Replacement

November 30, 2016 By Naylor’s Court Dental Partners

The Dental Implant Process

If you're looking for a tooth replacement option, chances are that you've heard about dental implants. A dental implant is composed of two parts; a titanium post that is placed into the jawbone, and a full crown placed on top of the implant. This creates an extremely durable, comfortable, and reliable replacement option, which is why it's become so popular in recent years!

Your Dental Implant Process

Getting a dental implant, or many implants, is a multi-step process. Here's what you can expect:

  • Consultation: The first step towards getting an implant is to consult with an experienced dentist. Your dentist will be able to evaluate your condition and discuss the best treatment choices for you. This is when you'll be able to find out whether or not dental implants are the best choice for your needs.
  • Extraction: Once you have chosen to move forward with your implant procedure, your dentist will need to extract the tooth that needs to be replaced, if it is still intact. In some cases, your implant can be placed during the same procedure as your extraction. Extractions are typically simple, and most patients do not have to be put under for this portion.
  • Implant placement: A titanium post will be placed in your jaw, replacing the previous tooth's root. Titanium is used because it is the only metal that will bond with your bone after a healing process, making the implant very strong.
  • Healing: Once your implant has been placed, there is a healing process. Your must wait until the implant has completely healed before placing and using a dental crown. This usually takes around 6-8 weeks, and your dentist will advise you on care during this time. Once your dentist can confirm that the implant is healed, you can continue!
  • Crown placement: The final step of a dental implant is to have your custom crown placed on top of your dental implant. Crowns today are typically made from a composite material, which means they are durable, comfortable, and they look great! Once your crown has been seated, you can use your tooth like normal.

Of course, every patient is different, and your procedure may vary slightly from the above steps. However, generally this is what you can expect for a dental implant procedure!
