Sometimes, you simply can’t keep your preventive dental appointment. This can be due to a public health outbreak like COVID-19, sudden travel, or work and family responsibilities. At Naylor’s Court Dental Partners, we want to help you keep your smile as healthy as possible when life prevents you from getting to the dental office.

Best Practices

The American Dental Association recommends twice-yearly teeth cleanings and exams—coupled with twice-daily brushing and flossing—as the foundation for a healthy smile. But when you have to skip treatment, we recommend the following:

  • Add an extra brushing and flossing to your twice-daily routine
  • Cut back on sugars and acidic foods and beverages
  • Rinse your mouth with a gentle mouthwash periodically
  • Stop smoking to help reduce your risk for periodontal disease
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Drink at least eight glasses of water each day

Whether you can see your dentist or not, it is always crucial to wear a mouthguard when playing sports and a nightguard if you grind and clench your teeth while sleeping.

Prevention is a collaboration between you and your dentist. When part of the partnership is on hold, it’s essential to be vigilant in the meantime.

And remember, any of the above steps can be added to your routine even when it is convenient to see your dentist twice yearly! And if you have an oral health complication, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist in Pikesville. We are always here to answer our patients’ questions.
