Root canals are straightforward and common dental procedures despite a somewhat intimidating reputation. Here is an overview of what to expect before, during, and after a root canal procedure.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a procedure to remove a tooth´s internal soft tissue, or ¨pulp,¨ that is infected or injured. The pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, is the actual living part of the tooth.
In a root canal, the dentist first cleans and numbs the tooth and surrounding gums in order to ensure that the patient does not feel any pain during the treatment. Then, using special instruments, the dentist removes the damaged pulp, cleans out the remaining empty space, and seals it with a filling material that prevents bacteria from re-entering the tooth, creating a healthy environment for healthy tissue to grow back.
For a week to ten days following a root canal procedure, the patient will take antibiotics and, as necessary, pain medication. After this period, the patient and dentist will choose between the long-term options of simply sealing off the opening with a filling material or placing a crown on top of the remainder of the tooth.
The good news is that a root canal, in addition to providing immediate relief for discomfort, can generally be expected to last, depending on how well they’re cared for, for ten to fifteen years before another treatment is required.
When Is a Root Canal Necessary?
A root canal becomes necessary when bacteria enter a tooth through a crack or an untreated cavity. Left untreated, this bacteria can result in inflammation and infection of the pulp (pulpitis), which can be quite painful. Beyond toothache, other symptoms of pulpitis include sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures and pain in the jaw. If neglected, pulpitis may result in an abscess (collection of pus) in the infected area, which can lead to tooth loss.
